Polaris Grad Hopes to Make a Positive Impact
“Jose Nieto served on Poudre School District’s Hispanic Institute for Learning and Leadership in 9th grade, on PSD’s Student Think Tank in 10th and 11th grade and worked directly with Dr. Jerry Wilson, on the Superintendent’s Youth Advisory Board his senior year,” Gawronski said. “He is always interested in making the community a better place for himself and others."
Nieto, who has attended Polaris for seven years, enrolled in the school as a 6th grader, soon after his family moved to Fort Collins from El Paso, Texas. Nieto is a first generation American born to Mexican parents who legally immigrated to the United States in search of a better life.
Nieto is fluent in both English and Spanish, plans to attend Colorado State University in the fall, and recently learned he will receive the Alonzo Martinez Scholarship, which was established to encourage Latino students to continue their education beyond high school. Currently a courtesy clerk at Sunflower Market, Nieto also plans to work his way through college.
